Nov 28, 2023BOOMS in Bloomington: where are the loud noises coming from? - Indiana Daily Student
Hearing booms coming from south of Bloomington? They’re coming from the military base in Crane, Indiana, about 25 miles southwest of Bloomington.
Crane Army Ammunition Activity spokesperson Randy Tisor said the loud noises are coming from demolitions of expired or obsolete munitions in the area, part of routine demolitions conducted for years.
The booms heard Wednesday were demolitions conducted around 11:30 a.m. The base will scale back demolitions moving into winter. Sound typically travels longer distances in winter — colder temperatures and a lack of leaves on trees let the noises carry further.
Naval Support Activity Crane is a U.S. Navy base, and by land area is the third-largest naval installation in the world. It employs more than 3,000.
