City of PG's street sweeping operations to last until mid

Dec 10, 2023Dec 10, 2023

Street sweeping season has begun in Prince George.

According to the city, crews are flushing meridians and sidewalks and a pair of sweeping trucks and loader brooms are working along the downtown core.

Manager of Roads and Fleet Jordan Wiseman told MyPGNow.com operations will wrap up later than usual due to the extended winter.

"Just because of the late start and some of the snow that is still hanging around and the cooler temperatures at night are the main reasons (for the late start). I am anticipating being done somewhere around the middle of June perhaps."

The city has seen a couple of dust advisories over the past few weeks and these operations aid in cleaning up the winter traction materials that have collected on our roads over the past few months.

"We do like to mitigate those as much as we can. Obviously, it comes down to esthetics and picking up the winter traction material, providing a safe passage for both motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists alike."

As for where they are during the early stages of street sweeping, Wiseman added that high-traffic areas like the downtown core has been a main focus.

"We do have a couple of street sweepers out today working with the loader broom and crews continue in the downtown core on all three shifts, flushing islands, and sidewalks."

"We have been flushing meridians, lily pads, and sidewalks trying to get ahead of the sweepers. We have deployed a loader broom yesterday to start picking up the bulk of traction material that is on our arterial and collectors," added Wiseman.

Wiseman also anticipates line painting to commence later this spring.
