(KNOX) -Trying to attract more flights to the Grand Forks International Airport includes approval of a grant application from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Sonjia Murray of the Meehan Aviation Group told Grand Forks City Council that the community pledged about a half-million dollars for the effort.

“This community did a really good job of getting pledges that totaled about $500,000 in local contributions. We asked for a million dollars from the DOT, and we’re waiting to hear on that. We submitted by the deadline July 25,” Murray told Grand Forks City Council this week.

Murray says The Meehan Group should hear about the requested grant from the federal government sometime next month.

“What we’re hearing right now is mid-November. That could change. It could go back, it could go forward. It’s tough with the federal agencies,” Murray said.

Murray told council that they have been working on securing more flights to Grand Forks International Airport. She said that the group is working with an airline that already has flights to and from the airport.

“With Allegiant to talk about two aspects, your airport, the costs at your airport, how the market is doing, and then also airport marketing,” Murray said.
