GRAND FORKS — After a hot day at the Border Battle earlier this fall, Grand Forks Red River’s Joe Quinn got his wish at the EDC Championship.

Rain the night before and a cooler breeze to the air brought out what Quinn described as near-perfect conditions for the Roughriders.

“Maybe like, five degrees cooler would be perfect, but you can’t really ask for anything better,” he said.

The result for Quinn was four seconds off his finish from the Border Battle and a first-place finish for himself and Red River on Saturday at Lincoln Park.

At 15:54.6, Quinn was in the front group that led for the majority of the race. Along with Elijah Dafoe, Davies’ Luka Rout and Shanley’s Quinn Carroll, the group of racers were all in contention from the first mile onward.

Quinn, taking a liking to the softer track, had the confidence to think outside the box for himself. It paid off in the long run.

“I wanted to take a new approach,” Quinn said. “I just stayed behind Elijah and my plan was at the K to just start going. Seemed to go pretty well.”

The Roughriders as a team were able to stay ahead of the curve. At the two-mile mark, Cohen Dunnigan sat in eighth and Asa Berberich sat in 12th but both were gaining steam.

Dunnigan jumped three spots into fifth with a 16:16.0 time and Berberich came in 11th with a 16:41.3 time — four seconds ahead of 12th place Isaac Cerney of Fargo North.

All in all, the Roughriders’ top-five runners finished in the winner’s circle as Scott Johnson was not far behind the pack with a 16th-place finish at 16:55.1.

Red River matched Davies’ top-five spread with each program separating their top-five runners just about a minute apart.

Grand Forks Central’s Grant Martin finished in 16:25.0 at ninth place.

On the girls' side, it was Alexis Lindgren’s determination that kept her in the lead from the start to a 19:19.7 first-place finish. The West Fargo senior had pushes from both Sheyenne’s Kathryn Madrigga and Red River’s Ava Parks.

Madrigga and Lindgren completed the two-mile leg at the same time, and very late down the stretch, Parks appeared to be pushing. While Maddriga would finish just behind Lindgren, Parks would drop down to fifth.

“I wasn’t really thinking I just zoned out the entire time. Just trying to stay with everyone,” she said.

West Fargo, as a team, finished fifth and the Mustangs took the team crown at 56 points by narrowly edging out Shanley (62). Red River finished fourth with 105 points.
